Yale Political Union Debate & Discourse

The Parliamentary Debate

In an era of deepening social divides, the art of respectful dialogue is more vital than ever.

The Yale Club of Nevada is proud to present a premier debate featuring six student members of the Yale Political Union, the nation's oldest and largest collegiate debate society.

Our student guests will tackle modern-day issues through traditional parliamentary debate. Each motion will conclude with a Q&A and live voting, allowing the audience to participate directly in the resolution.

The two motions to be debated:

  • Motion 1 - Resolved: Trump's Attacks on Universities are Unjustified

  • Motion 2 - Resolved: America Needs to Restrict Immigration

A Look at the Campus Climate

Beyond the formal motions, the students will host a Q&A regarding the current social landscape at Yale and how it affects student life.

About the YPU

Founded in 1934, the Yale Political Union is the nation’s oldest and largest collegiate debate society. With over 200 members, the organization has seen a resurgence on the Yale campus in the last few years. Currently at the helm is Senior Brennan Columbia-Walsh, who will be participating in this YCN event alongside other Officers on the Board.

The Union houses seven different parties that fall into three traditional coalitions: the Coalition of the Left, the Independent Coalition, and the Coalition of the Right. Their weekly parliamentary debates have historically included such distinguished guests as Ronald Reagan, Joe Biden, and Milton Friedman.

Learn more about the history of the Union, the parties and coalitions, and the Board on their website.
